Your tape measure is one of the most used—and most abused—tools in your kit. Whether you're a professional contractor or a DIYer, proper care can add years to its life and save you from mid-project frustration.

Here are 5 proven tips to keep your tape measure in peak condition.

Tip 1 - Avoid Letting It Snap Back

Letting the blade snap back at full speed is the fastest way to wear out the return spring, damage the hook, and warp the tape.

🔧 Tip: Always guide the blade back gently with your thumb or finger.

💡 Bonus: It also helps prevent finger injuries and bent tape edges.

Tip 2 - Keep the Blade Clean and Dry

Dirt, sawdust, and moisture are the tape’s biggest enemies. They can cause rust, gunk up the housing, or lead to inaccurate readings over time.

🧼 Tip: Wipe the blade down with a soft cloth after each use—especially if you’ve been cutting wood, working in the rain, or measuring on concrete.

🌧️ Pro Tip: If your tape gets wet, fully extend it, let it dry completely, and then retract it.

Tip 3 - Don’t Use It as a Pry Bar, Lever or Hammer

It’s tempting to use the tape measure as a makeshift pry bar, screwdriver, or punch—but it’s not built for that.

🛑 Tip: Use your tape only for what it’s designed to do: measure. Even high-end models can break if misused.

Tip 4 - Store It Properly

Leaving your tape measure loose in a dusty toolbox or truck bed exposes it to constant vibrations, knocks, and debris.

🧰 Tip: Store it in a designated spot in your tool belt, toolbox, or workshop wall. For best results, choose a dry, cool environment.

🧲 Consider a magnetic hook or belt clip for quick access without the wear and tear.

Tip 5 - Check and Protect the Hook

The end hook is small but critical. If it bends or loosens too much, it can throw off your measurements by as much as 1/16 of an inch or more.

🔍 Tip: Inspect the hook regularly. If it’s bent, straighten it with pliers. If the rivets are loose, it may be time to replace the tape.

🛡️ Some pros even wrap a bit of electrical tape over the hook during storage to prevent damage.

Be good to your Tape Measure!

Your tape measure is more than just a strip of metal—it’s a precision tool. With just a little maintenance and care, you can keep it working like new for years.

Treat it well, and it’ll return the favour every time you reach for it.
