A Brief History of the Spirit Level
The invention of the spirit level dates back to the 17th century. French scientist Melchisédech Thévenot is widely credited with creating the first known version around 1661. His design used a sealed glass tube filled partially with alcohol or another clear liquid, leaving an air bubble inside. This bubble, when centered between marked lines, indicated a level surface.
Before the spirit level, builders often used simple plumb bobs or water levels, which were much less precise and often cumbersome. Thévenot’s innovation quickly spread across Europe, revolutionizing masonry, carpentry, and surveying by offering a much more convenient way to measure level surfaces.
Types of Spirit Levels

Digital Level: A modern version with electronic sensors and digital readouts for ultra-precise measurements, often used in high-end carpentry and engineering work.
How to Use a Spirit Level

2. Place the level — Lay it flat on the surface you’re testing.
